THAMES RING 2013 REPORTThe third edition of Thames Ring took place between 3rd and 7th July.
33 runners started out from Goring Village Hall on Wednesday 3rd July and 14 made it back there by Sunday, having completed the 250 mile circuit.
The fastest man was Steve Judd who finished in 66 hours 49 minutes. This was the third fastest time ever in the race. Second was Matt Taylor and third Tom Chalk.
Kate Hayden won the women’s cup and was the only the second woman ever to finish the race. It is almost incredible that this was only her third ultra. Earlier this year she ran the Compton 40 and the 145 mile Grand Union Canal Race.
Javed Bhatti is now the only person with three successful completions, another remarkable achievement.
Again there was a significant foreign entry. Gunnlaugur Juliusson from Iceland and Thomas Eller from Germany were successful.
We had three innovations this time. Firstly, we had a land line to receive calls from runners and marshals throughout each day and night. Secondly, thanks to Alan Joslin, we had a blog so that anyone interested could follow the race. Thirdly, we appointed Managers for every Check Point. This took some of pressure away from Dick Kearn and myself (joint organisers).
Managers, marshals and transporters vastly outnumbered the runners, particularly when the field thinned out in the latter half. Their efforts made the race. Many a runner would have retired if it had not been for the encouragement and help that they received at the Check Points. Runners have asked me to express their appreciation and gratitude to all the volunteers.
I plan to publish a full report of the race in the next edition of Trailrunner.
