Further information

Starting from Cock Clarks, Fox & Hounds pub, your journey will take in some of the famous green lanes of Essex and open countryside. This include ‘The Old Salt Lane’ where salt extraction was an important industry in 14th/15th century and the track was used to transport the salt. You will pass some ancient woodland that used to cover Essex so keep your eyes peeled. Your journey will take in ‘Charity Lane’ which is a fine example of a green lane dating back to Roman times, the country has over 800km of these tracks. As you continue your journey you pass the WW1 Aerodrome which saw the birth of the first Air Defence of Britain (1916), responding to the first raid by Zeppelins and Gotha bombers on London and the South East. You finally enter the footpath ‘Pilots Way’ where the pilots would walk back and forth, to the local villages. Returning to the pub for a well earnt drink, maybe sitting in the same area as those brave young pilots enjoying a local beer. rn(Charity Lane & Aerodrome/Pilots way only on 7.2 mile route)
